Bank Ekonomi targets 32%
growth in loan portfolio
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Business | Wed, April 06 2011, 8:00 AM

Publicly-listed Bank Ekonomi, a subsidiary of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. (HSBC), will expand its loan portfolio by 32 percent or by about US$500 million this year, bank president Tony Turner said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The bulk of this year’s loans would go to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), he added.

“SMEs have always been Bank Ekonomi’s main business since its establishment in 1989 and will continue to be its largest customer base,” Turner told a press conference after the bank’s annual shareholders’ meeting.

He added that, when HSBC acquired control of Bank Ekonomi in May 2009, the bank had built up a wealth of experience and a deep database on lending to SMEs through its 95 branches in 27 cities.

“Over the past two years, HSBC has invested a lot in strengthening Bank Ekonomi’s risk management and expanding and modernizing its branch networks,” said Guy Harvey-Samuel, HSBC’s Group General Manager in Hong Kong, who was elected on Tuesday as the new chief commissioner of the bank.

Samuel said the acquisition of Bank Ekonomi, a mid-size bank with Rp 21.52 trillion ($2.47 billion) in assets as of last December, provided a great opportunity for HSBC to take part in Indonesia’s robust and growing economy.

Both banks, he added, had good synergy whereby HSBC could share its international experience and strong capital base to strengthen Bank Ekonomi’s lending to SMEs and trade financing.

We will continue to expand Bank Ekonomi’s balance sheet, customer base and strengthen its capital base,” Samuel said.

Turner acknowledged tough competition in the mid-size bank segment. But the market is quite large, notably in SMEs, where Bank Ekonomi has built up a strong advantage through its community banking services, Turner added.

He said the bank’s loan portfolio grew by Rp 2.8 trillion or 33 percent last year, but its net profit declined to Rp 296 billion from Rp 332 billion due to heavy investment in branch expansion and systems operations. - See more at:
